| The Tender Years - First EditionIn 1922, a family, dried out on the praries four years in a row, finally gets a chance to carve out a new life from the bushland of Northern Alberta. They load all of their worldly possessions into a railway boxcar to gamble again on yet another uncertain future. Exposed to the elements in inadequate, rented houses the family faces unfortunate circumstances that rear up to test its fortitude, while it keeps increasing in number. This is the second book in a historical trilogy that leads "The Gentle Gamblers" to continue to explore and experience life. | |||
Reviews: Once again, Lillian Ross has written another very human, very compassionate, and very engrossing episode in the saga of a Canadian family in search for the fulfillment of their dreams. The facination of renewing the reader's acquaintance with the main characters from "The Gentle Gamblers" is, however, the prime attraction of this book. It is like meeting old familiar friends. Circumstances change, problems come and go, and progress is not made easily, yet the family continues to grow not only in number, but maturity and diversity as the years progress. There are now new family members who are born to take their place in the family as a whole; and with each new personality interacting with the parents, and the older brothers and sisters, the story continues to develop into a delightful study of family life, family love, family leadership and warm human relations. This book continues to whet one's reading appetite for the third part of this exceptionally well written historical novel set on the Canadian praries. Great Canadiana! Jim Hagan Never before has a book affected me so that I couldn't put it down like this one! Danny Hall | ||||
